John Chow’s trip to Malaysia June/July 2005

After 30 years of leaving Malaysia,  during which I only connected once with my own Yang Tai Chi Chuan lineage,  I feel happy and anxious.  It is a very outstanding lineage with lots of combat experience.  Most of the old masters  -  senior students of Yap Siu Ting have passed away.  Strangely,  nobody bothered to archive the lives and stories and techniques of these illustrious masters.  I feel a responsibility to contribute my share of passing down the stories of these great practitioners.

I saw and interviewed a number of Tai Chi Chuan masters and practitioners in Malaysia.  Due to my time constraints,  I could not see every master,  but I am happy to write and comment briefly on some who I happen to have caught on camera.

I confirm my prior expectations that all of them are different, move differently, have different ideas, different emphasis and different approaches even though they may be from the same master (eg.  Yap Siu Ting, Lo Tong Bao, Chok Kam Seng)

As they are all excellent and authentic,  all of them have something to contribute.  I do not try to discriminate who is better than who.

Below are the masters I interviewed.  All, except for one,  is from the Cheng Man Ching Yang Style lineage.

Please click on the following html links for details.  I list the masters in geographical order,  starting from north of the country to the south of the country.

Master Ho Ah San

Master (Dato) Phang Zai Ching

Master Zhao Wei Dong

Master Koh Ah Tee

Master Lau Kim Hong

Master Wang Jian Zhen

Master Low Puay Choon

There are many other authentic teachers in Malaysia and Singapore,  but I did not have opportunity to interview them due to time and financial constraints.

I will seek out more good teachers during my next trip.
